LOVASS therapy is recommended for autistic children as it has shown a tremendous effect on preparing children for interactions in the real world in a consistent, safe environment. This type of therapy is effective because the parents and the therapist work very closely together, and the parents are heavily involved day to day.
LOVASS is typically utilized during all of the child’s waking hours and grows in intensity from 10hrs per week as an infant to upwards of 35hrs for children ages 3 and up. The children respond well to the reward-based system and the therapist utilizes re-direction for behaviors that have become repetitive or unwanted. Young children have the benefit of remaining in a familiar environment learning to work with siblings and parents and then progress to playdates and other interactions in a school setting. This allows the child to be able to imitate and experience everything around them as learning opportunities. This fully immersive therapy is incredibly helpful for developing the child’s social abilities and communication skills.
